(Recovery Timeline)
What you can expect.

Liposuction (fat removal) is a commonly used part of body contouring and gender-affirming procedures (e.g. feminizing or masculinizing). After the procedure, a structured healing process follows, during which your body finds its way back to a normal shape from swelling, pain and tissue changes.
This page gives you a practical timeline so that you have realistic expectations and can optimally plan your daily life.
Recovery after liposuction
Most fat removals / liposuctions are outpatient, you can go home the same day.
You will feel moderate pain, swelling and bruising in the treated zones – this is normal.
Compression garments are applied to reduce swelling and to promote better skin contact at the new contour profile.
The first 24 hours require rest and usually support from another person.
Light walks are recommended to promote blood circulation (not intensive training).
Pain and swelling begin to subside, but remain noticeable.
Continue wearing compression garments daily (except when showering) — this helps shape and healing.
Many people can resume light daily activities, but no heavy physical work.
You should continue to drink plenty of water and eat well (e.g. low in salt) to reduce swelling.
Most people feel significantly less pain and more freedom of movement.
Many patients return to work, especially if the activity is not physically demanding.
Minor swelling and bruising may still be present, but they continue to subside.
Increase light walking – important for circulation, but still no intensive training.
Swelling and firmer areas on the treated body become increasingly softer, and your contours clearer.
You can start to integrate light sports such as gentle jogging, yoga or cycling – but only after medical clearance.
Heavy weights or intensive workouts should not yet be resumed.
Many people feel much more comfortable in daily life during this phase, even if minor traces of swelling remain.
For many, this is the point at which major swelling has subsided and you can resume normal physical activities or sports — of course always after medical clearance.
The results of the contour become more clearly visible, even though slight swelling processes can still take place.
The body now shows steady changes in contouring.
Your skin continues to adapt to the new shapes, and scars gradually begin to soften.
Many patients see minimal residual swelling, but a clearer overall shape.
Up to one year after your procedure, you can expect the final contour and shape, as the body has fully healed and residual swelling has disappeared.
Scars mature slowly, fade and become softer — sun protection is important to avoid dark pigmentation.
Important to know
Individual healing times vary – depending on the extent of the liposuction, your health and how well you follow the postoperative instructions.
Moderate pain, swelling and changes in sensation are normal and part of the usual healing course.
Tips for better healing
Compression & care
Wear your fitted compression garments as recommended – often for at least 4–6 weeks.
Maintain a healthy, balanced diet and adequate fluid intake.
Activity & movement:
Gentle walks from the first days improve healing and lower the risk of thrombosis.
Only resume intensive work, heavy lifting or sports after clearance from your team.
Swelling & patience
You may not see results immediately — swelling can take months to fully subside.
Shapes appearing early are not the final result; patience is part of the healing process.
When are the results visible?
- At the beginning: You usually see an early contour shape, but it is still influenced by swelling.
- 6 weeks: Clear improvements become more visible.
- 3–6 months: The shape appears more defined and natural.
- Up to 12 months: Final results crystallize.
Frequently asked questions about Liposuction: Recovery (Recovery Timeline)
We are happy to answer your questions about the treatment here.
An initial effect is visible immediately, but the final result requires patience. Only when all the swelling has subsided and the skin has fully regenerated – usually after 3 to 6 months – does your new contour reveal itself in its full glory. The small puncture sites also fade during this time and become almost invisible.
If fat was injected into your hips or buttocks during your body contouring, caution is advised. Pressure is the enemy of freshly transplanted fat cells. During the first 6 to 8 weeks, you should try to avoid direct pressure on the augmented areas. Special cushions or an adjusted sitting position help to avoid disrupting the blood circulation of the new fat cells.
Yes, we often recommend professional manual lymphatic drainage starting from the second week after the procedure. It helps to drain accumulated fluid in the tissue, soften hardened areas (fibrosis), and make the final result visible more quickly. It's best to discuss the frequency directly with us at your first follow-up appointment.
Your body needs time to recover. Light walks are good shortly after the surgery to get your circulation going. However, you should wait at least 6 weeks before doing intensive sports, strength training, or stretching exercises in the area of the liposuction. Always listen to how your body feels and consult with your surgeon.
The operation is only the first step toward your new silhouette. Proper aftercare ensures that the skin grows back smoothly onto the underlying tissue, that swelling subsides quickly and – if a fat transfer was performed – that the transplanted fat cells at the hip survive optimally. Without consistent aftercare, you risk the formation of dents or a less pronounced result.
Bruising and swelling are completely normal after liposuction and no cause for concern. They usually peak after 3 to 5 days and then slowly subside. Drinking plenty of fluids, light exercise, and consistently wearing the compression garment are the best ways to speed up this process.
As a rule, after liposuction you should consistently wear your compression garment day and night for about 4 to 6 weeks. The garment exerts even pressure on the treated areas. This not only helps against swelling, but also supports your skin in adapting to the new, slimmer contour and prevents the formation of fluid accumulations (seromas).
